II CONFERENCES ON THE VALUES OF THE EUROPEAN UNION AT THE PRESENT TIME. THE ROLE OF VALUES IN THE EU’S FOREIGN ACTION.


The Jean Monnet Chair of the UMH Renforcer les valeurs de l’UE. Le rôle de la citoyenneté active, with co-financing from the European Union’s Erasmus + Programme (Jean Monnet Programme), organizes the II Conference on the Values of the European Union at the present time. The role of values in the EU’s external action.

This activity, coordinated by UMH professor Elena Crespo Navarro (Jean Monnet Chair holder), is aimed not only at students of the Degrees in Law, Political Science and Public Management, DADE, ADE, Journalism or Industrial Relations, but also at other Degrees less related to European integration studies, as well as Master and PhD students, AUNEX students, secondary school teachers, lawyers, attorneys, members of associations, unions and NGOs, and the general public.

The European Union is founded on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including those of persons belonging to minorities. Values common to the Member States in a society characterised by pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between men and women.

The purpose of the Conference will be to reflect on the relevance of such values for the proper functioning of the Union and, in particular, in its relations with the rest of the world.

The Conference will take place, with the format of round tables, on May 17 and 24, 2021 in online mode through Google Meet.

The first session will be held on Monday 17 May from 6:15 p.m., with a round table in which two professors from other Spanish universities and Jean Monnet Project holders: Prof. Dr. Antoni Blanc Altemir, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Lleida, will participate with a presentation entitled “The promotion and protection of values in the external action of the European Union” and Prof. Dr. Francisco Pascual Vives, Senior Tenure Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá, with a presentation entitled “The promotion of European values in the trade and investment policy of the European Union”. Prof. Dra. Elena Crespo Navarro, Senior Tenure Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the Universidad Miguel Hernández of Elche and Jean Monnet Chair holder, will moderate the round table.

The second session will take place on Monday, May 24 at 6:15 p.m. with a round table in which two renowned specialists in the field: Profa. Dra. Araceli Mangas Martín, Full Member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences and Professor of Public International Law at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid with the presentation entitled “Relations of the European Union with the Mediterranean countries” and Prof. Dr. Carlos Jiménez Piernas, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá, Head of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the presentation entitled “Relations of the European Union with Russia”. The table will be moderated by Profa. Dra. Elena Crespo Navarro, Senior Tenure Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the Universidad Miguel Hernández of Elche and Jean Monnet Chair holder.
