III CONFERENCE ON EU VALUES AT THE PRESENT TIME


The UMH Jean Monnet Chair Reinforcer les valeurs de l’UE. Le rôle de la citoyenneté active organized, with the co-financing of the Erasmus + Program of the European Union (Jean Monnet Program), the III Conference on the values of the European Union at the present time.

This activity, coordinated by the UMH Professor Elena Crespo Navarro (Jean Monnet Chair Holder), was aimed not only at students of the Degrees in Law, Political Science and Public Management, DADE, ADE, Journalism or Labor Relations, but also at other Degrees less related to studies on European integration, as well as Masters and PhD students, students of the University Classrooms of Experience (AUNEX), secondary school teachers, lawyers, attorneys, members of associations, unions and NGOs , and at general public.

The Conference took place, in the format of round tables, on April 7th and May 12th , 2022 at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, in classrooms 1.2 and 1.7 of the Arenals Building (Elche Campus).

The first session was held on Thursday, April 7th and started at 4:00 p.m.

 

 

 

 

Participated in this first round table: Prof. Dr. Carlos Jiménez Piernas, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá and Professor Jean Monnet,  with the presentation entitled “How do disinformation campaigns affect European Union values”, Prof. Dr. Araceli Mangas Martín, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the Complutense University of Madrid and Full Member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences of Spain, with the presentation entitled “Turn in the defense of the values of the European Union: the war in Ukraine” and Prof. Dr. Alejandro del Valle Gálvez, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Cádiz and Director of the Jean Monnet Center of Excellence “Immigration and Human Rights in the European External Borders”, with the presentation entitled “Refuge, immigration and the values of Europe”. The table was moderated by Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche and Jean Monnet Chair holder.

The second session took place on Thursday, May 12th  at 4:00 p.m. with a round table in which Prof. Dr. Luis Norberto González Alonso, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Salamanca and Director of the European Documentation Center “Europe – Direct”, with the presentation entitled “The values of the EU and its security and defense policy: reflections in light of the war in Ukraine”, Prof. Dr. Francisco Pascual Vives, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations of the University of Alcalá, with the presentation entitled “Transnational companies and protection of human rights in the external action of the European Union” and Prof. Dr. Ángel Sánchez Legido, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Castilla La Mancha, with a presentation “Syria 2015/Ukraine 2022: Two different models of and response to refugee crises”. The round table was moderated by Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Jean Monnet Chair Holder.

II CONFERENCE ON EU VALUES AT THE PRESENT TIME. THE ROLE OF VALUES IN THE EU’S EXTERNAL ACTION.


The UMH Jean Monnet Chair Reinforcer les valeurs de l’UE. Le rôle de la citoyenneté active organizes, with the co-financing of the Erasmus + Program of the European Union (Jean Monnet Program), the II Conference on the values of the European Union in the current moment. The role of values in the EU’s external action.

This activity, coordinated by the UMH Professor Elena Crespo Navarro (Jean Monnet Chair Holder), is aimed not only at students of the Degrees in Law, Political Science and Public Management, DADE, ADE, Journalism or Labor Relations, but also of other Degrees less related to studies on European integration, as well as Masters and PhD students, AUNEX students, secondary school teachers, lawyers, attorneys, members of associations, unions and NGOs , and the general public.

The European Union finds its foundation in the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including those of persons belonging to minorities. Values common to the Member States in a society characterized by pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between men and women.

The aim of the Conference will be to reflect on the relevance of such values for the proper functioning of the Union and, very particularly, on its relations with the rest of the world.

The Conference will take place, in the format of round tables, on May 17th  and 24th , 2021 in online mode through Google Meet.

The first session will be held on Monday, May 17th , starting at 6:15 p.m., with a round table in which two professors from other Spanish universities and Jean Monnet projects holders will participate: Prof. Dr. Antoni Blanc Altemir, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations of the University of Lleida, with the presentation entitled “The promotion and protection of values in the external action of the European Union” and Prof. Dr. Francisco Pascual Vives, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations of the University of Alcalá, the presentation entitled “The promotion of European values in the trade and investment policy of the European Union”. The table will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University Miguel Hernández of Elche and Jean Monnet Chair holder.

The second session will take place on Monday, May 24th at 6:15 p.m. with a round table in which two renowned specialists in that field will participate, Profa. Dr. Araceli Mangas Martín, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the Complutense University of Madrid and Full Member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences of Spain, with the presentation entitled “The relations of the European Union with the Mediterranean countries” and P rof. Dr. Carlos Jiménez Piernas, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá, Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Legal Department, with the presentation entitled “Relations between the European Union and Russia”. The table will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University Miguel Hernández of Elche and Jean Monnet Chair holder.

THE DEFENSE OF THE RULE OF LAW AND DEMOCRACY IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

The Area of ​​Public International Law and International Relations of the University Miguel Hernández of Elche organizes, with the co-financing of the Erasmus + Program of the European Union (Jean Monnet Program), the Conference on the values ​​of the European Union at the present time.

The European Union is founded on a series of values: respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including those of persons belonging to minorities. Values ​​which the Treaty states are common to the Member States in a society characterized by pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between men and women. The purpose of the Conference will be to reflect on the relevance of these values ​​for the proper functioning of the Union, on the status of these values at the present time, on the existing mechanisms to guarantee them and on their real effectiveness, as well as on its relevance and degree of compliance in the development of certain common policies, such as immigration and asylum.

The Conference will take place, in the format of round table, on March 9th, 2020 at 6:00 p.m., in classroom 1.7 of the Arenals Building (Elche Campus), with the round table entitled “La defensa del Estado de Derecho y la democracia en la Unión Europea
