Participation in the Conference on Breast Cancer and Labor Discrimination

On December 17, 2020, was held at the Elche Campus the Presentation day of the TFG entitled “Proposal for a labor protection law for breast cancer patients”, prepared by Belén Lara Ros and awarded in the V edition of the Department of Legal Science awards for the best TFG within the framework of the Institutional Chair UMH Legal Clinic. Profa. Dra. Elena Crespo Navarro, Jean Monnet Chair holder, participated as a speaker at the round table.

Collaboration iin the organization of IX Enconunter of the Network of the Spanish Universities' Legal Clinics

The Jean Monnet Chair “Renforcer les valeurs de l’UE. Le rôle de la citoyenneté active” collaborated with the UMH Legal Clinic Chair in the organization of the IX meeting of the Network of Legal Clinics of Spanish Universities held online at the UMH on Friday, October 15th from 9:30 a.m to 14:00 p.m.

In addition, Prof. Elena Crespo Navarro, Jean Monnet Chair Holder, will moderate the third panel, entitled “Legal clinics in Europe”.

COLLABORATION IN INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF EUROPEAN UNION LAW

The Jean Monnet Chair of the UMH collaborated with the I International Congress of European Union Law “The European Union before the objectives of sustainable development”, organized by the Faculty of Law and the European Documentation Center of the University of La Laguna, which was held from March 15 to 19, 2021 in online format.

In addition, Professor Elena Crespo Navarro, Jean Monnet Chair holder, spoke on March 18 at the VII Symposium of the Congress entitled The promotion of the rule of law in the European Union, with the presentation “Mechanisms for the defense of the rule of law in the European Union”.

COLLABORATION WITH THE SCIENTIFIC SEMINAR ON INDIGENOUS PEOPLES, HUMAN RIGHTS AND TRANSNATIONAL COMPANIES. CHALLENGES FOR IBERO-AMERICA AND THE EU

Within the framework of the activities of the Reflection Group on the future of the European Union and its values, the UMH Jean Monnet Chair participated in the V Scientific Seminar on International Law: Indigenous peoples, human rights and transnational companies. Challenges for Latin America and for the European Union, organized by the Area of ​​Public International Law and International Relations of the University of Alcalá, together with the Nueva Granada Military Institute (Colombia), the National University of Cuyo (Argentina) and the Rafael University Landívar (Guatemala).

The Seminar, which was held online at the University of Alcalá on June 14, 2021, focused on legal problems arising from the interaction between the rights of indigenous peoples and transnational companies, paying special attention to the challenges that this relationship presents for Latin America and the European Union.

IX COURSE ON SECURITY AND DEFENSE: Spain in the Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union

The Jean Monnet Chair “Reforzar los valores de la UE. El papel de la ciudadanía activa” organized with the subsidy of the General Technical Secretariat for Defense Policy of the Spanish Ministry of Defense (order of January 25, 2021), the IX Course on Security and Defense titled Spain in the Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union. The role of our Armed Forces in EU international missions.

The activity, under the academic direction of Prof. Dra. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University Miguel Hernández and Jean Monnet Chair holder, took place on October 4th and 5th, 2021 in room 0.5 of the Altabix Building (Elche Campus).

The course began with a brief opening session chaired by the Vice-rector of teaching staff, Prof. Dr. José Carlos Espigares Huete on behalf of the UMH, in which Colonel D. Juan Billón Laá, Head of the Defense Culture Area of the Security and Defense Coordination and Studies Division (General Secretariat for Defense Policy, Ministry of Defense) and Prof. Dra. Elena Crespo Navarro Director of the Course and Jean Monnet Chair holder, also took part.

Deputy Delegate for Defense in Alicante, Colonel of the Marine Corps, D. Juan Bosco Montero Prado, and the Naval Commander of Alicante. Capitán de Navío D. Joaquín Vegara Jiménez, also attended.

The first round table, Spain and the Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union , was held on Monday, October 4th, with the participation of the Navy Frigate Captain Dr. Federico Aznar Fernández-Montesinos, analyst and professor at the Higher Center for National Defense Studies, and of Prof. Dr. Ms. Araceli Mangas Martín, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the Complutense University of Madrid and Full Member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences of Spain. The round table was moderated by Prof. Dr. Carlos Jiménez Piernas, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá.

The second round table, The role of the Spanish Armed Forces in the Military Operations of the European Union. EUTM-Mali, took place on Tuesday, October 5th with the participation as speakers of Colonel Mr. Juan Billón Laá, Head of the Defense Culture Area of the Security and Defense Coordination and Studies Division (General Secretariat for Defense Policy, Ministry of Defense) and Prof. Dr. Valentín Bou Franch , Professor of Public International Law and International Relations of the University of Valencia. The round table was moderated by Prof. Dr. D. Francisco Pascual Vives, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the University of Alcalá.

The main objective of the activity is to promote among civil society and, particularly, among the university community, knowledge, debate and reflection on the work of the Spanish Armed Forces, and its vital importance and necessity to guarantee the defense of our country in an environment of international peace and security in the current strategic scenario. To increase its visibility and contribute to the progressive creation of a culture of defense among the civilian population and especially among the university community.

The activity was aimed at university students of the Degrees in Law, Political Science and Public Management, Journalism… but also at students of other degrees whose curricula do not address the study of these topics (Physical Education and Sports Sciences, Medicine, Engineering…), to those over 55 years of the “Sabiex” Program of the UMH, as well as the rest of the university community and other sectors of the citizenry.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ORGANIZATION: THE CONFERENCE ON THE FUTURE OF EUROPE

The Jean Monnet Chair of the UMH “Renforcer les valeurs de l’UE. Le rôle de la citoyenneté active” organized, with the subsidy of the Presidency of the Generalitat Valenciana (Resolution of June 6th, 2021), the International Conference: The Conference on the future of Europe.

This activity, directed by Prof. Dra. Elena Crespo Navarro, Associate Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the UMH and Jean Monnet Chair Holder, took place on November 24th and December 1st , 2021 in classrooms 0.1 and 0.2 of the Arenals Building (Campus of Elche).

The purpose of the Conference was to reflect on the challenges that the EU is currently facing and on what its priorities should be in the coming years in order to face such challenges, improving its resilience to economic and health crises.

The objectives of the activity: To promote debate and reflection on the challenges that the EU has to face in the coming years. Provide citizens with a meeting space for an open and inclusive debate on issues related to EU action areas affecting their daily lives. To give all stakeholders the opportunity to make their voices heard and participate in shaping future EU policies and actions, promoting constructive conversations focused on finding solutions to problems and fostering understanding and the search for consensus. To develop ideas collectively through teamwork, based on prior knowledge of the situation and the reflections of the experts.

The Conference, aimed at all citizens, consisted of three round tables and a participatory practical workshop.

The first Conference, held on November 24th in Classroom 0.2 of the Arenals Building, consisted of two round tables in which expert professors from different Spanish and Italian universities participated.

The first round table, Wednesday, November 24th  at 10:15 a.m., featured the participation of Prof. Dr. Valentín Bou Franch , Professor of Public International Law and International Relations and Jean Monnet Chair “European Value” holder at the University of Valencia, by Prof. Dr. Jaume Ferrer Lloret , Professor of Public International Law and International Relations and Coordinator of the Interuniversity Center for European Studies at the University of Alicante, by Profa. Dr. Marta Sobrido Prieto , Associate Professor of Public International Law. University of A Coruña and Profa. Dra. Elena Crespo Navarro, UMH Jean Monnet Chair holder.

At the second round table, Wednesday, November 24 at 12:15 p.m., three Italian professors participated as speakers: Prof. Dr. Leonardo Pasquali, Associato di Diritto internazionale, Responsabile Modulo Jean Monnet Solidarity in EU Law, Dipartimento di Giurisprudenza. Università di Pisa (Italia), Prof. Dr. Simone Vezzani, Associato di Diritto dell’Unione Europea e Tutela dei diritti umani. Dipartimento di Giurisprudenza. Università di Perugia (Italia), Profa. Dra. Teresa Russo, Associato di Diritto dell’Unione Europea, Responsabile Modulo Jean Monnet EU-Western Balkans Cooperation on Justice and Home Affairs, Dipartimento di Scienze Giuridiche. Università di Salerno (Italia) y el Prof. Dr. Francisco Pascual Vives, Associate professor of Public International Law and International Relations. University of Alcala.

The Second Conference took place on Wednesday, December 1st, 2021, with two different activities. In the morning, a round table and, in the afternoon, a participatory practical workshop entitled Reinforcing the values of the European Union. The round table on December 1st took place at 12:30 hours in Classroom 0.2 Arenals Building and had the participation as speakers of two renowned specialists: Prof. Dr. Araceli Mangas Martín, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the Complutense University of Madrid and Full Member of the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences of Spain, and Prof. Dr. Carlos Jiménez Piernas, Professor of Public International Law and International Relations of the University of Alcalá. The table was moderated by Prof. Dra. Elena Crespo Navarro.

In the practical workshop (4:30 p.m. Classroom 0.1 Arenals Building ) the leading role went directly and fully to the participants. Based on the ideas presented by the experts in the round tables, the workshop reflected on the need to strengthen EU values and on the role that citizens can play in this. This activity was devoted, firstly, to briefly explaining the functioning of the Conference platform on the future of Europe and the way in which ideas can be proposed through it or comment on ideas already proposed by others and, secondly, to the presentation of ideas by the participants themselves who will discuss them and prepare specific proposals by drafting a final report, with the assistance of the moderators, which will be submitted to the Conference platform. The workshop was developed in several steps: approach and discussion of ideas on EU challenges and priorities; identification of issues and challenges, proposal of solutions and preparation of a common report that was uploaded to the Conference platform.

The workshop was moderated by two PhD students of the PhD Program in Social and Legal Sciences, Ms. Alessandra Nasoni and Ms. Adela Rodríguez Mañogil and by a Double Degree in Buisiness Administration and Law student, collaborator of the Legal Science Department, Ms. Rocío Pozo Tomás.

INTERUNIVERSITY WORKSHOP ON IMMIGRATION AND ASYLUM IN THE EUROPEAN UNION (PROJECT PRODIC OF TEACHING INOVATION INTERNATIONALIZATION AT HOME)
PARTICIPATION IN INTERNATIONAL LITIGATION COMPETITION (COLOMBIA)

A UMH team of Double Degree in Business Administration and Law students participated in the V International Litigation Competition, held in Bogotá from July 5th to 8th, 2022

The UMH team, made up of 5th year Double Degree in Business Administration and Law students, participated in the oral phase of the V International Litigation Competition, organized by the University of Alcalá (Madrid, Spain) and the Nueva Granada Military University (Bogotá, Colombia).

The Competition consists of the defense of a hypothetical case before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and is divided into two phases (written and oral).

After the completion of the written phase, in which the members of the UMH team successfully defended the position of a fictitious State in a case concerning an individual claim relating to an abortion case in which the right to life and the project of family life were at stake, a part of the team intervened, as representatives of the State, in the oral phase of the procedure, held in Bogotá from July 5th to 8th , 2022 and in which they competed with 22 other teams from different Universities of several Latin American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Peru). For the preparation of the case, they studied in depth both the inter-American system and the European system for the protection of human rights, which was reflected in the preparation of their respective Final Degree Projects.

This teaching innovation and internationalization project has been coordinated, from the UMH Jean Monnet Chair, by the Professor of the Area of Public International Law and International Relations, Elena Crespo Navarro, and had the support of the Office of the Vice President for International Relations of the UMH Department of Legal Science and the Vice Dean of the Double Degree in Business Administration and Law.

The team is made up of Double Degree in Business Administration and Law students, Helena Bonet Jaén, Marcia Bikié Motogó Mengue, Rocío M. Pozo Tomás and Fanny Rivero Terol, together with the coaches Adela Rodríguez Mañogil and Alessandra Nasoni, PhD students of the Program in Legal Science at the UMH.
